Description: In this 3-hour class you will create 1-2 trivets, sized 3.5''x4'', in a hexagonal open weave pattern. Working with commercial reed, we’ll learn how to weave in three directions (triaxial weaving) to create a hexagonal pattern. Your finished woven piece works well as a coaster/trivet, an art object, or a small wall decoration. This hex weave design is popular in many countries, specifically made popular in the U.S. by the religious group the Shakers, and is also common in Asian countries, especially Japan. It’s a clever design, in that it provides a strong and sturdy weave, but is also lightweight and uses less material than most plaiting methods. Making a small project in this weave is a great introduction to this hex weave design; once you’ve mastered it at the small scale, you can venture into making larger baskets. Instructor will provide written instructions and all weaving materials necessary for the class. Your kit will include: precut 1/4'' flat reed, extra reed in case of breakage, handout with diagrams & template, plastic sleeve to keep handout dry.
Tools needed for class: A bath-sized towel, to keep workspace dry. Small clothespin clips, 2-5 (or small quilting clips). Small scissors for cutting reed. Spray bottle filled with water. Small tub for soaking reed (a small, hard plastic tote works well).
