Tule Gathering 2026
Tule Gathering 2026
Date & Time: August 2, 2026, Sunday (Low tide is ~ 9:26am PT) we will meet at 10am PT
Location: Wetland near Seal Rock, about 8 miles south of Newport, on the Oregon Coast.
Cost: $10 non-refundable. (This fee helps support other Guild programs.) Starting this year, 2026, all watercraft need a “Waterway Access Permit.” Permits are available online (click here to learn more) through ODFW or a licensing agent. Cost is $6 for a 7-day permit (plus a possible $2 service fee, if purchased online) or $20 for one year.
Note: This gathering is meant for Guild members only. If you are not a Guild member, but would like to become one, click here.
Description: This is a wonderful opportunity for the Columbia Basin Basketry Guild to harvest tule (Scirpus acutus), AKA Bulrush, Rush, Hardstem Bulrush. There also is juncus and cattails that we may harvest. The wetland is private and protected, and held in trust through Portland Wetland Conservancy.
IMPORTANT: The wetland is somewhat accessible from the bank but also accessible by kayak or canoe. Anyone using watercraft will do so at their own risk; life jackets are encouraged to be worn for safety.
The tule is 6 to 10 feet tall. You may gather as much as you can, and in doing so this will encourage new growth. We will start at 10 am. We will try and do a partner team.
What to bring:
Boots / dry socks
Long-handled clippers or loppers
Sharp knife
Life jackets are encouraged
Tarp, shower curtain, sheet
Ties or rope; long stick, pole to keep the tule straight, 6 ft or longer
Drinking water, there is no drinking water at the site
Bathrooms are at the dock where we will meet.
A long plank of wood to stand on and reach further would be helpful.
The last day to register for this event is Wednesday, July 29, 2026.
