Description: Learn about basic tools, materials and weaving techniques. We will cover natural materials, how to gather and process some plants that grow in the Northwest, and get to know the tools commonly used for basket making.
The day is all about exploration! We’ll look at finished baskets and see examples of coiling and cordage for inspiration. Hands on opportunities will include using yarn to learn twining styles, explore plaiting with cattails, craft a Dexter knife sheath with cedar and birch bark we process, and weave a small basket with materials we explore in class. These techniques should be learned more deeply in separate classes however.
These processes take more time than allowed for this exploratory class.
This class is meant for Guild members only. If you are not a Guild member, but would like to become one, click here.
