Instructor: Renae Reindel

Student skill level and skills required: Beginners. Requires some manual dexterity and physical ability akin to weaving.

Description: Using broom corn (sorghum) and natural hemp, cotton, or linen cord, weave a beautiful and functional 12"x8" hand broom with traditional Shaker techniques.

Supplies provided: Sorghum, cord, foot spindles, cutting devices (scissors, pruners), hand saw for trimming ends.

Supplies needed: Water bottle, comfortable clothing, wear socks as you may want to remove shoes for broom tying.

Renae Reindel Bio:  A born Oregonian, I moved from Eugene to Portland with my family in 2017. I hold an MPH in Epidemiology from OHSU and have worked in clinical research, data analysis, and outcomes evaluation related to addiction and homelessness for 15 years. I use craft as a way to soften and stay connected to the natural world. I have been making brooms for a little over two years, after being taught by a local artist who was trained in traditional Shaker techniques. I make brooms because I admire the Shaker approach to craftsmanship in objects that are meant to be used, and I find joy in sharing the craft with others.
