Location:Wetland near Seal Rock, about 8 miles south of Newport, Oregon Coast. Registrants will be emailed further instructions and address information closer to the event.
Cost: $10 non-refundable. (This fee helps support other Guild programs.)
Description: TheColumbia Basin Basketry Guild has a wonderful opportunity to harvest Tule (pronounce too-lee), also known as Bulrush, Rush, Hardstem Bulrush (Scirpus acutus). The wetland is private and protected, held in trust through the Portland Wetlands Conservancy.
Important Information: The wetland is somewhat accessible by the bank, but also accessible via kayak or canoe. Anyone using watercraft will do so at their own risk: life jackets are encouraged to be worn for safety.
The Tule is 6 to 10 feet tall. We may gather as much as we can, and in doing so this will encourage new growth. We will start at 10 am. We will try and do a partner team. Bathrooms are at the dock where we will meet.
Tools Needed:
* Boots / dry socks
* Long handle clippers or loppers
* Sharp knife
* Tarp, shower curtain, sheet
* Ties or rope; long stick, pole to keep the tule straight (6 ft or longer)
* Bring drinking water; there is no drinking water available on-site
* A long plank of wood to stand on and reach further would be helpful.
Anyone who really wants to participate and needs a ride, or if you have any questions, please reach out to Sherrie at ColumbiaBasinBasketryGuild@gmail.com.
The last day to register is Tuesday, August 26.
