Description: Pat Hickman asks, “What makes a basket alive? Can a basket be a living thing?”

These are questions not so much to be answered as pondered. They are explored by breaking boundaries, going beyond.

In her presentation – sharing ideas, images, and questions – she will suggest artists’ ways of working, in a continuing active creative process. Pat’s signature material is an inner animal membrane with which she makes sculptural forms, giving the material new life. She wonders aloud what each of us has within that shapes our imaginations and how we see. How is this translated into our art work?

Pat Hickman is Professor Emerita of Art, University of Hawaii, and lives in Haverstraw, NY. Her studio is at the Garnerville Arts and Industrial Center, NY. Hickman’s work is in major collections, including the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, the Oakland Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Denver Art Museum, the Honolulu Academy of Arts, and the Hawaii State Art Museum.
